Artist Bio:

Carl is a fiber artist who has been sewing and quilting for approximately seven years. Like many artists working in fiber, he began with traditional quilt patterns before moving toward increasingly complex abstract and improvisational work based on his own designs. His practice is driven by a deep fascination with color and shape, with a particular love for curved, improvisational forms. Carl works using a range of techniques, including improv quilting, appliqué, and both domestic machine and long-arm quilting. One of his greatest strengths lies in resolving complex improvisational compositions—bringing disparate elements together into a cohesive and dynamic final work.

Despite his relatively short time as a fiber artist, Carl’s work has been widely recognized. His quilts have been juried into numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2023, he was named Emerging New Artist at Interpretations at the Visions Museum of Textile Art in San Diego. His work has also been selected for QuiltCon, multiple American Quilt Society shows, Mancuso’s QuiltFest exhibitions, and the International Quilt Festival. He has been a Road to California semi-finalist for the past five years and was juried into Salon Pour l’Amour du Fil in Nantes, France and Quilt Canada. Carl has also received numerous ribbons and monetary awards for his fiber art. Most recently, his piece Destiny Calling III appeared at CraftForm, an exhibit featuring various types of crafts, at the Wayne Art Center, Wayne, PA. His work has appeared in many publications, including his selection as a juried artist in “Fiber Reimagined II”, hosted by Fiber Arts Now magazine.

Outside the studio, Dr. Carlton “Carl” G. Brown, RN, PhD is a long-time oncology nurse, researcher, author, and health care executive. He is the editor of an award-winning oncology textbook and has cared for patients with cancer for more than 30 years. Carl lives in Palm Springs with his always-supportive husband and the true head of the household, Pippin the Wonder Schnauzer.
